Description Icon Pallagrello-Bianco Description

Origin: Campania, Italy
History: Pallagrello Bianco is a white grape variety native to the Caserta province in the Campania region of Italy. Its name derives from the local dialect 'U Pallarel,' meaning 'small ball,' referring to its perfectly spherical berries. The grape was highly prized in the 18th century by King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who included it in his renowned 'Vigna del Ventaglio' (Fan-shaped Vineyard). Despite its royal favor, Pallagrello Bianco nearly faced extinction due to phylloxera and changing viticultural practices. In the 1990s, Italian vine grower and former lawyer Peppe Mancini rediscovered and revitalized the variety, leading to its resurgence in modern winemaking.
Appearance: Small, perfectly spherical berries with a yellow-green hue.
Growing Traits: Pallagrello Bianco is a mid to late ripening grape variety with naturally low yields. It exhibits good resistance to various viticultural hazards, including botrytis bunch rot, making it suitable for late harvest wines. The grape clusters are small and cylindrical, often resembling a fox's tail, larger at the top and tapering down to a point.
