Description Icon Grenache-Blanc Description

Origin: Northeastern Spain
History: Grenache Blanc, known as Garnacha Blanca in Spain, is a white grape variety that is a mutation of the red Grenache (Garnacha) grape. It originated in northeastern Spain and has become prominent in southern France, particularly in the Rhône Valley. The grape is a key component in many white Rhône blends and is also used in the production of fortified wines. Its versatility and ability to thrive in warm climates have contributed to its spread to other wine regions worldwide.
Appearance: Medium-sized, greenish-yellow berries forming compact clusters.
Growing Traits: Grenache Blanc is a vigorous, upright-growing variety that resists well against the violent winds of France's Mediterranean coast, such as the Mistral and the Tramontane. It is a late ripener, about 3½ weeks after Chasselas, making it a Period II variety. The grape prefers well-drained soils and can be prone to overproduction, which may lead to wines lacking in acidity and structure if not carefully managed. However, when yields are controlled, it can contribute flavor and length to blends, particularly with varieties like Roussanne.
