History
Fortana, also known as Canina Nera, is a red Italian wine grape variety grown primarily in the Emilia–Romagna region of northern Italy. Its name roughly translates to 'strong' or 'tough one' and is thought to be a reference to the grape's hardiness in – or even preference for – tough clay soils. Historically, it has been cultivated in the coastal areas near the Adriatic Sea, particularly in the Bosco Eliceo region, where it thrives in sandy soils. The grape is known for its high yields and was traditionally used to produce light, refreshing wines to complement the local cuisine.
Appearance
Large, loosely packed clusters of medium-sized, dark-skinned berries with a bluish-black hue.
Growing Traits
Fortana is a vigorous and productive vine, well-suited to the sandy soils of the Emilia-Romagna coastal plains. It is resistant to certain diseases and adapts well to the humid, maritime climate of the region. The grape's high acidity and moderate sugar levels make it suitable for producing both still and semi-sparkling wines.
Light-bodied with a fresh and lively character, often exhibiting a slight effervescence in its frizzante style. Typically dry, though off-dry versions exist, especially in semi-sparkling wines. Low tannin levels, contributing to its smooth and approachable palate. High acidity, providing a crisp and refreshing quality that balances its fruitiness. Moderate alcohol content, typically ranging between 10% and 12%, making it a light and easy-drinking wine.
Fortana wines are characterized by vibrant red berry and cherry flavors, often accompanied by subtle herbal and earthy notes. In wines produced near the coast, a slight saline quality can be detected, adding to their complexity. The high acidity ensures a crisp, clean finish, making Fortana a delightful choice for those seeking a light and refreshing red wine.
Fortana's high acidity and light body make it an excellent match for a variety of dishes. It pairs particularly well with cured meats like prosciutto and salami, as well as seafood dishes such as grilled eel and fried fish. The wine's slight effervescence in its frizzante form complements rich, fatty foods, and its refreshing nature makes it a good companion for spicy dishes and tomato-based sauces.
