Pelaverga Description
Origin: Piedmont, Italy
History: Pelaverga is a rare red grape variety native to the hills of Piedmont in northwestern Italy. It is primarily grown in the Verduno Pelaverga and Colline Saluzzesi DOCs of the Cuneo province. The grape is known for producing light-colored wines with distinctive strawberry aromas, often found at the fruitier, more fragrant end of the Pinot Noir spectrum. Despite its unique characteristics, the cultivation of Pelaverga has declined due to the increasing popularity of international varieties like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. However, dedicated producers in Verduno have preserved this indigenous variety, contributing to its continued, albeit limited, presence in the region.
Appearance: Medium-sized, round berries with a blue-purple hue, covered in a waxy bloom.
Growing Traits: Pelaverga is a vigorous variety with medium to large, conical or pyramidal clusters. It prefers dry, hilly terrains with good exposure and is sensitive to bunch rot, which can affect the consistency of its production. The grape is known for its high productivity, though yields can be irregular. It is also susceptible to sunburn and magnesium deficiency.

Pelaverga's light body and vibrant acidity make it a versatile companion for various dishes. It pairs well with prosciutto and melon, grilled chicken salad with strawberries and balsamic vinegar, and beef carpaccio. Its delicate flavors also complement antipasti, vegetable pies, gnocchi, and various types of risotto.
Light-bodied with a delicate and subtle character, offering both freshness and complexity. Typically vinified dry, though it can exhibit ripe fruit characteristics. Low to moderate tannin levels, contributing to a smooth and approachable mouthfeel. Medium to high acidity, providing vibrancy and enhancing its food-pairing versatility.
