History
Irsai Olivér is a Hungarian white grape variety created in 1930 by viticulturist Pál Kocsis through the cross-breeding of Pozsonyi and Pearl of Csaba. Initially developed as a table grape, it has since become popular for wine production due to its distinctive Muscat-like aroma and early ripening characteristics. The grape is cultivated in several Hungarian wine regions, including Mátra, Balatonboglár, and Pannonhalma, and has also found a foothold in neighboring countries such as Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Austria.

Growing Traits
Irsai Olivér is an early-ripening variety, typically harvested in August. It is characterized by high yields and early budburst but is sensitive to cold and frost, making it susceptible to damage in cooler climates. The grape is particularly appealing to birds and wasps, requiring careful vineyard management. It thrives in volcanic soils, such as those found in the Mátra wine region, where cooler climatic conditions help retain its acidity, yielding fresh, crisp, aromatic wines.
Light-bodied with a fresh and aromatic profile, offering a balance between fruitiness and subtle acidity. Typically dry, emphasizing its crisp and refreshing character, though some off-dry versions exist. Negligible tannins, as it is a white wine variety, resulting in a smooth and clean finish. Moderate acidity, contributing to its freshness and enhancing its aromatic qualities. Moderate alcohol content, generally ranging between 11% and 12.5%, providing a balanced and approachable character.
Irsai Olivér wines are characterized by their aromatic intensity, with prominent notes of Muscat, grape blossom, and elderflower. On the palate, they are light and fresh, exhibiting flavors of gooseberry and citrus, complemented by a delicate spiciness. The moderate acidity ensures a crisp finish, making these wines particularly enjoyable when consumed young.
Irsai Olivér's light body and aromatic profile make it an excellent companion for a variety of dishes. It pairs well with light appetizers, salads, and seafood, particularly grilled fish or shrimp. Its fresh acidity complements creamy chicken stews with paprika and dishes featuring Brussels sprouts, chestnuts, and bacon. Additionally, it is a popular choice for making spritzers during the summer months.
