Heroldrebe Description
Origin: Germany
History: Heroldrebe is a red German wine grape variety developed in 1929 by breeder August Herold at the grape breeding institute in Weinsberg, located in the Württemberg region. It is a cross between Blauer Portugieser and Lemberger (Blaufränkisch). The grape was named in honor of its creator, August Herold. One of Heroldrebe's notable characteristics is its relatively late ripening, with a harvest time similar to that of Pinot Noir. Despite its initial promise, Heroldrebe's cultivation has declined over the years, with plantings decreasing from 155 hectares in Germany in 2008 to near extinction in recent times. However, its legacy endures through its offspring, Dornfelder, which has become one of Germany's most important red wine varieties.
Appearance: Dark-skinned berries forming compact clusters.
Growing Traits: Heroldrebe is a late-ripening grape variety that thrives in warmer climates, particularly in regions like Pfalz, Rheinhessen, and Württemberg. It is known for its high productivity and yields dark-berried grapes. However, its late ripening can be a drawback in cooler vintages, potentially affecting the quality and consistency of the wine produced.
