History
Grenache Gris, known as Garnacha Roja in Spain, is a pink-skinned mutation of the red Grenache (Garnacha) grape. It is believed to have originated in Catalonia and has spread to regions in southern France, particularly Languedoc-Roussillon. Despite its long history, Grenache Gris remains relatively obscure and is often found interspersed among Grenache Noir vines. It is traditionally used in blends but has gained attention for its potential in producing distinctive varietal wines.

Growing Traits
Grenache Gris is a vigorous and productive grape variety that thrives in warm, dry climates. It is resistant to drought and adapts well to rocky, well-drained soils. The grape's thick skin provides some protection against diseases, and it is known for its ability to withstand strong winds, making it suitable for Mediterranean coastal regions.
Medium-bodied with a balanced structure, offering a harmonious blend of fruit and mineral notes. Typically dry, though some off-dry and sweet styles are produced, especially in fortified wines. Negligible tannins, as it is a white wine variety, resulting in a smooth and clean finish. Medium to high acidity, contributing to its freshness and enhancing its aging potential. Moderate to high alcohol content, typically ranging between 12.5% and 14.5%, providing a robust and warming character.
Grenache Gris wines are characterized by a complex and layered flavor profile, with medium to full body and high acidity. They exhibit a range of fruit flavors, including citrus, peach, and apricot, as well as herbal and floral notes. This combination of flavors and structure contributes to a refreshing and versatile wine.
Grenache Gris's balanced acidity and mineral undertones make it a versatile companion for various dishes. It pairs well with seafood, particularly shellfish and grilled fish, as well as poultry and creamy cheeses. The wine's subtle fruit flavors complement dishes featuring citrus or herbal elements, enhancing the overall dining experience.
