About Glera

Origin
Italy
History
Glera is a white grape variety of Italian origin, predominantly grown in the Veneto and Friuli regions of northeast Italy. It has been cultivated for hundreds of years and is best known as the primary grape used in the production of Prosecco wines. In 2009, the European Union officially renamed the grape from 'Prosecco' to 'Glera' to protect the designation of origin for Prosecco wines, ensuring that only wines produced in specific regions could bear the name 'Prosecco'.
Appearance
Green-skinned, medium to large berries forming loose clusters.
Growing Traits
Glera is a highly productive grape that ripens late in the season. It thrives in the temperate climate of northeastern Italy, particularly in the hilly areas with well-drained soils. The grape is known for its high acidity and relatively neutral flavor profile, making it ideal for sparkling wine production.
